Fidel Castro: Cuba Will Continue Fighting Terrorism Havana, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) President Fidel Castro of Cuba affirmed that his country is in a position to continue the struggle against terrorism while at the same time developing economically and socially. At the close of a meeting with health and education officials in which a salary increase was announced for workers in those sectors, the president avowed that the Revolution will continue elevating the quality of life for the population without abandoning the battle against terrorism. Calling to mind the Havana conference on combating terrorism that took place a few days ago and brought together hundreds of intellectuals, human rights defenders, social activists, as well as political and union leaders from 70 countries, Fidel Castro said the country will dedicate the time necessary for everything. The statesman noted that the conference revealed the criminal essence of the US policy toward Latin America and its regional attachments with military dictatorships and governments that cave in to Washington. "We learned terrible things, we did not know the extent of the horror," he said, speaking of the testimonies at the event by Madres of the Plaza de Mayo, the victims of Operation Condor, and investigators of "transnational terror." Fidel Castro said that everything is being put together and divulged, referring to the allegations and documents presented at the Conference. At the meeting, the president also called for justice for all of the criminal actions masterminded by Luis Posada Carriles, detained in the United States only on immigration charges, despite his long terrorist record and the request by Venezuela for his extradition. The Cuban president pointed out that the lies and schemes of the US government are going to be apparent, and made it clear that Cuba's thirst for justice and her principles in the fight against terrorism prompt her involvement in this issue, not a search for prestige. Again stressing continued action, he warned "this struggle will continue without truce" without abandoning continuing economic development and elevating the quality of life for Cubans. The president stressed, "We will dedicate the time necessary for everything." |
