Computer cheats

Just two weeks ago I bought a computer from a person who sells used PC systems at Rawatawatta, Moratuwa. I had a visit to his residence where he showed me several machines and came to an agreement to buy a system at a price of Rs. 21,000.

He delivered the system as he promised but the price had been increased by Rs. 1000. I had to pay Rs. 22,000 because I was in much need of a PC system. When I noted that four software which I asked had not been installed he wanted me to bring the system back to his place. I brought it there, he installed three softwares except the facility for internet surfing.

When I reminded him that our agreement includes the internet facility for my PC, he was telling me that the system which I bought usually did not include modems for internet facility. He also wanted me to pay something extra for that facility and I had to refuse it as it goes beyond our agreement. I am anyhow not a technical man but I cannot believe that the brand which I bought comes without modems.

This is to warn the public about the kind of thieves who cheat helpless customers.

Keep in mind

The LTTE is a deadly terrorist organisation engaged in ruthless killings even today violating the Ceasefire Agreement. It is an established fact that India nurtured and trained the LTTE terrorists in guerrilla warfare to de-stabilise Sri Lanka which was then in a sound economic footing. However, the penalty India has to pay for their stupidity was unbearable.

America and England harboured these terrorists and allowed them to fatten their coffers and buy arsenal branding them as freedom fighters disregarding our appeals against their activities here. For this America and England had to pay penalties on 9/11 and 7/7 respectively.

There are still a few western countries that do the same mistake. These countries should take a lesson from what has happened and act cautiously or else the next victim would be one of them.

Fast and die

I have read with extreme interest the article written by Dharmapala Senaratna on the fraternity that stage a fast unto death these days at public places at the drop of the hat. These include laymen as well as the clergy and the reasons given for the fast are sometimes funny and whimsical. Nevertheless, the fasting individual who proclaims that he will not stop this side of death is accompanied by a horde, an entourage of men, women and children who support the cause.

I wish to inform the acolytes, relations, friends and others who want publicity in the electronic and other media that Section 299 of the Penal Code of the Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, reads thus: "If any person commits suicide, whoever abets the commission of such suicide, shall be punished with death."

According to Section 490 of the said Penal Code, attempting to commit an offence both parties are equally liable.

Let's be compassionate

The sufferings of the Africans are melting the hearts of many around the world. Millions of Africans are dying of famine and AIDS. The G8 countries are to write off the debts of some of these African nations.

Sri Lanka is offered US$ 3 billion by donor countries as tsunami aid. There is chaos in the country over its distribution. Whilst we should sympathise with the plight of tsunami victims undoubtedly the sufferings of the Africans are far greater than that of the Sri Lankans.

Having lived in Africa I have witnessed the sufferings in many African countries. Therefore as Sri Lankans we should request the donor nations to divert the US$ 3 billion aid to Africa. We live in a global village and we should not be selfish and think only of Sri Lankans, specially as majority of us are religious minded and follow our religious leaders. Our neighbour India is an example. Although many Indians live in poverty, India rejected aid for tsunami victims.

If this is done the rest of the world will admire our generosity. Besides, helping the Africans is more needy. this will also solve our internal problems and the political uncertainty in the country. With such simple solutions being available, it is mind-boggling as to why some resort to committing suicide over distribution of aid from the white skinned donors.

Nirvana seeker.
