Budget 2006 to continue UPFA's pro-poor, pro-growth policies - Dr. Jayasundera The budget deficit in 2006 would be between 8-9% of the GDP. The Government will not set a lower budget deficit at the cost of low economic growth, Treasury Secretary, Dr. P. B. Jayasundera told a press conference last week. Budget 2006 will continue the pro-poor, pro-growth policies of the UPFA government that targeted infrastructure development, rural development and the SME sector. The framework of the budget also includes UN millennium development goals. The Government is considering how money should be allocated from the budget to achieve these goals. The Treasury is now calling for proposals for the budget from the public, business chambers, trade unions, business organisations and hope to hold discussions with all stakeholders. In the construction of infrastructure, the government will complete those proposed and projects already started rather than going for new projects. The proposed highways will be completed. Re-construction of the road network of the tsunami-affected areas will be started shortly and the contractors have already been selected. In the power sector Upper Kotmale and Norocholai power projects will be completed on the medium term. Dr. Jayasundera said that the government will continue to provide assistance for the SME sector of the economy. The World Bank and Asian Development Bank have now recognised SMEs as core sectors of the economy. |
