Catholic Bishops hail President The Catholic Bishops Conference has hailed President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for her unfaltering commitment to the protection of religious freedom of minorities. In a press communique issued last week, the Conference noted with gratitude the tenure of office of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. "During her Presidency, she demonstrated an unfaltering commitment to the protection of religious freedoms of the minorities," the communique noted. It also said that she was resolute and decisive in her commitment and did not hesitate to use all resources at her disposal to protect religious minorities from physical harm. "She respected and upheld the dignity of the Catholic and Christian population of our country through many trials and tribulations, for which we are most grateful. "We trust that she will continue to provide her guidance and support for the betterment of our country in a new role as a distinguished former President," it continued. In relation to the peace process, the Conference commended the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement but cautioned "that the new President should adopt an approach which is more inclusive than earlier, in the peace negotiations, taking into consideration all shades of opinion and thereby develop a political consensus on the future of our country." |
