Join forces with Mahinda to save the nation! Inter-University Alumni Forum Convener Rev. Batapola Nanda and W. K. Piyasena in a statement appeal to the national intelligentsia to join forces with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse to usher in a peaceful and prosperous country. The full text follows: We, the alumni of the University System, nurtured and developed by the nation and our beloved portents, come before you with spontaneity of emotion and unbounded national pride. The nation and the country are in the throes of being devoured by poverty, terrorist war and devastation. The exclusive and undisputed ownership of this national catastrophic state and disintegration is proudly shared by all those who were at the helm of national affairs from 1948, with a few exceptions, and their most obedient civil administrations. Sri Lanka is a unitary state. All its inhabitants, whether they are Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Malay or Burgher are Sri Lankans. Today, as it was never before, all Sri Lankans, without exception, are confronted with the most critical and decisive moment of the destiny of the beloved nation and the country. The 2005 Presidential Election imposes on us the final chance for national salvation and reconstruction. It has brought us to the verge of a new era and a new direction for peaceful and harmonious reconstruction of the country. We are destined to play this role; the role is mandatory on us. It is the duty inalienable and inherent. As sons and daughters of a proud nation, we commit ourselves solemnly to uphold glorious traditions of the nation and to dedicate ourselves to the noble efforts to open up a new era for the country and the nation. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, you are the leader and the trailblazer of the current progressive movement of this country. We salute you and your glorious endeavour to usher in a new era for our beloved country and the nation leading to a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous Sri Lanka.
