Fonseka and Santha placed 7th and 8th

by Leslie Fernando

P. D. S. Fonseka and V. G. N. Santha of Sri Lanka Navy who represented Sri Lanka at the 11th Asian Rowing Championships which concluded on October 24 in Hyderabad, India were placed 7th and 8th in their respective events.

Oarsmen from 15 countries participated at the championships conducted by Asian Rowing Federation (ARF) and Fonseka finished 7th amongst 29 rowers in the Light Weight Single Sculls. Fonseka combining with Santha were placed in 8th position out of 24 in the Lightweight Double Sculls.

Deva Henry, President Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka who attended the asian Rowing Federation annual congress, during the championships said Sri Lanka's bid to stage 2007 Junior Asian Rowing Championships was not successful.

The ARF decided to offer it to South Korea. The 2006 Junior Asian Rowing Championships will be held in Singapore.

Sri Lanka, however, will set the opportunity to host the 2008 Asian Junior rowing Championships added Henry. But it will also depend on our success of conducting the South Asian Games rowing events on the Bolgoda Lake in April 2006.

The Asian Junior Rowing Championships are held every year and Asian (Senior) Rowing Championships once in two years. So South Korea will host both the Junior and Senior Asian Rowing Championships in Seoul in 2007.

SA Games pool

The National Rowing squad has begun training on the Beira Lake under Lakmal Wickremage National Coach and Saliya Wijesekera said Henry. The current pool of 32 oarsmen will be reduced after the initial testing to be carried out by end of this month.

Regular tests will be carried out to monitor the progress of the oarsmen. Depending on these results of the eventual combination of crews the pool may be further reduced if necessary. Currently the squad trains six sessions a week. This will be increased to 8 sessions beginning next month.
