Royal-Thomian Regatta ends in a tie

The 33rd annual Royal-Thomian Regatta ended in a thrilling tie. Both sides collected 20 points each from the six events and shared the T. Noel Fernando Trophy held on the Beira Waters yesterday, sponsored by Dialog GSM.

Royal was leading with 20 points to Thomian 8 at the end of the 5th race. The decider was in the final event, 'A' Fours (Boat Race). Thomian crew comprising of Dayantha Siriwardena, Shanon de Silva, Dineshka Aluvihare, Milindra Kulugammana and Manil Salgadie rowed with superior teamwork to win the event 'clocking' 3 minutes 19 seconds. Thomian oarsmen beat the Royal crew of Keshal Jayasinghe, Reza Akram, Dewmith Ekanayake Dinouk Perera, Gishan Karunanayake.

Thomians won the Boat Race to increase the tally to 18 to Royal 13.

This is the third time the Annual Regatta ended in a tie. The other two occasions were in 1993 and 2001.

Royal won the Junior Four, Senior Four and Junior Four while the Thomians won the Senior Four, Senior Scull and Junior Scull. Thomians also won the Junior 'B' Four but no points were awarded. Old Thomians won the old boys Four defeating Old Royalists.
