Lanka's value added tea exports top 94m kgs by Elmo Leonard Sri Lanka's exports of tea in value added form during the first 10 months of this year made up 94.17 million kilograms or 42 per cent of tea sold overseas; a gain from 81.40 million kilos (37 per cent) of value added teas which were exported during the corresponding months of '04. These figures blend with bulk exports of tea for January-September '05 making up 131.41 million kilos - 58 per cent, while during the corresponding 10 months of last year, shipments were a higher 141.03 million kilos - 63 per cent. Sri Lanka's exports of tea for the 10 months in review are 225.59 million kilos, a gain from 222.44 million kilos exported during Jan-Sep '04. Tea imported and re-exported during the first 10 months of this year is 7.19 million kilos or 3 percent of teas exported as against 6.54 million kilos imported for blending and re-export, compared to 10 months of '04. More tea in packets were shipped this year, being 62.21 million kilos - 28 per cent, while 49.01 million kilos - 22 per cent was exported during the first 10 months of '04, according to the research unit of Asia Siyaka. Tea bag exports for the first 10 months of '05 amounted to 13.10 million kilos, 6 percent, up from 12.92 million kilos exported during the corresponding 10 months of last year. The exports of instant tea have dropped this year to 778,828 kilos from 1.31 million kilos, exported during the corresponding first ten months of '04. Green tea exports for Jan-Sep this year show a rise at 1.83 million kilos from 1.75 million kilos exported during the corresponding 10 months of '04. The 'other tea' export category for the first 10 months of this year makes up 9.04 million kilos, as against 9.86 million kilos exported last year. |
