Chilaw plantation workers get biggest profit bonus The benefits of the privatisation of Management are enjoyed by the employees of Chilaw Plantations Limited, managed by Wayamba Plantations (Pvt) Limited, who were paid their highest ever profit share since privatisation in 1992 last month. The profit share based on attendance and profit resulted in some workers being paid as much as approximately Rs. 30,000 each, for the year. In addition, the company improved the living and working conditions of the estate workers staff and also the social and welfare activities during the past 13 years. This is recorded as such in the 2005 October issue of the Plantations Development Trust Magazine. The awarding of a profit share to the workers began after the company took control of the estates in 1992. Workers receiving these large bonuses have been made continuously, every year, since 1992. Hard work, dedication and innovation by all and on the spot decisions and guidance and implementation by the Management has contributed to the success of the company. The siting of the Head Office in Chilaw in close proximity to the area of operations instead of from air-conditioned offices in Colombo has also been a vital input. The Chief Executive Officer of Chilaw Plantations Limited and Managing Director of Wayamba Plantations (Pvt) Limited the Managing Agents, Willem Bogtstra said that the results could have been better with less interference from various sources, particularly of late. Bogtstra said that no other coconut or other plantation company, private of government managed, has paid such attractive bonuses to their workers. |
