Defeat sends shock waves in UNP by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The United National Party (UNP) is dazed after the humiliating defeat at the 5th Presidential election and their next move is yet to be decided. Senior UNP members are studying possibilities of filing a Presidential Election petition on the grounds that the LTTE prevented people exercising their franchise and complain to the international community about the LTTE. But UNP Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake ruled out any such official move. "We are still trying to settle down from the unexpected defeat. UNP's next move has not been finalised so far", he noted. Attanayake said that the defeat is not a fault of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. This unexpected defeat is due to the prevention of North and East people to cast their votes by the LTTE. "Therefore, we all need Ranil Wickremesinghe to lead our Party", he added. He said that Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake assured re-polling if there were any disturbances, but when a re-polling for the North and East was requested he refused to hold re-polling expressing that the same thing will happen again. It is sad that he had come to such predetermined conclusions, Attanayake said. |
