Underprivileged schoolboys get intensive coaching Forty underprivileged schoolboys from the under-14 age group will be picked into a 'pool' and from this 20 will be sponsored by Lion Brewery and Fingara International Cricket Academy (FICA) to undergo intensive training for a period of three to five years by qualified coaches at the FICA. The selection of the final 20 players will be made by a panel comprising Anura Tennekoon, Duleep Mendis, Hashan Tillakeratne (all former Sri Lankan captains), Mervyn Jayasinghe (Deputy Chairman of F & G Group) and Tony Opatha (Executive Director of FICA). The objective of this program is to lend a hand to talented and outstanding cricketers who need assistance to enhance their skills and also to extend support for them to rise to international level. Lion Brewery will be meeting the expenses for the coaching fees and clothing of these cricketers and trained twice a week for two hours by coaches to the FICA.Principals of schools from all parts of the country have been requested to nominate three outstanding eligible students from their under-14 sides to be considered for the sponsorship. Many have already responded and their nominees have been summoned for trials which will commence soon. L. G. |
