Lanka, Pakistan trade tops $200 million The bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and Pakistan has topped US$ 200 million for the first time in the trading history between the two countries from July 2004 to June 2005, said Deputy High Commissioner of Pakistan High Commission Ishtiaq Hussain Andrabi. He said that during the period Pakistan exported goods to the value of US$ 155 million while the Sri Lankan exports amounted to US$ 46 million. At present the Balance of trade is in favour of Pakistan. The trading was affected after the tsunami of December last year. He is confident that the trade and the volume will increase due to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in June this year. Pakistan has offered duty concessions on traditional exports from Sri Lanka to Pakistan such as betel, ceramics, rubber and coconut. He said the FTA has helped both countries increase their trade and he was optimistic that the volumes will be much higher next year. (SG) |
