Scheme to assist over 1,850 fishermen in Puttalam by Elmo Leonard Over 1,850 fishermen in the Puttalam district, last week received Rs. 5,000 to build their houses up to the foundation under a scheme which is in operation islandwide. This scheme is funded as an outright grant by Japan and managed by the Fisheries Ministry. Under this program, fishermen who live in temporary houses built of wood, cadjan and zinc, receive Rs. 50,000 to build permanent houses on land they own. This scheme also includes those who are engaged in ancillary fisheries activity such as net and boat building and those who trade in fish. In stage two, 150 other fisher families in the district received Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 10,000 each to reach window and lintel levels in their construction endeavours, assistant director of fisheries, for the Puttalam district, Raja Vitharnage said. The fourth stage involves the completion of walls for which Rs. 17,000 is paid. Thereafter, in the fifth stage, the balance Rs. 10,000 is given to each fisherman to put up the roofs of their houses and plaster walls. |
