Team spirit the key to success by L. S. A. Wedaarachchi Team spirit made us winners and team work helped us achieve our goal, said a spokesman for Informatics, a leading software and IT service provider. The proper utilisation of human resource in an organisation is the best way to achieve its vision and the working force from top to bottom should act as a team for its success. Explaining the importance of team work in an organisation, corporate trainer Gihan Talagodapitiya said, team work increases productivity. Teams do work which ordinary groups cannot do and teams utilise the resources more effectively and usefully. Problems are also solved by the teams thereby establishing a better working atmosphere, he said. Gihan Talagodapitiya, the Singapore based Sri Lankan corporate trainer has conducted more than two-thousand workshops in over three-hundred organisations in the Asian region over the last twenty years. At present he is conducting Human Resource Development workshops in Shanghai, China where he was invited by a multi-national company. At Mackwoods, a leading multi-faceted, Sri Lankan Commercial venture' Talagodapitiya gave a teamwork presentation last week. He introduced his presentations as customer made activity based indoor and outdoor training with free follow-up action sessions. "The key ingredients of a team are loyalty, conviction, trust and commitment. Great teams build trust and mutual support and enhance communication. They expand risk taking confidence and learn and use a conflict resolution process. They always develop a shared problem solving approach", he said. Explaining the remarkable features of the effective team leaders, Talagodapitiya said, effective team leaders have clear consistent goals and are always open, fair and willing to listen. The leaders support all other team members and they take the responsibility of team actions, he said. "Effective team members have a commitment to goals. They show a genuine interest in other team members. They confront conflicts and listen attentively valuing individual opinions freely and express their ideas", he said. "It is essential to have a strong commitment to common objectives and at the beginning team members should define their appropriate roles and responsibilities. As a team, it should have an effective decision system, communication and work procedure mutual trust among others is also important to succeed as a team", he said. "Team work is interdependent. Mutual support and encouragement, mutual learning of skills and experience, mutual pressure on achieving goals and deadlines contribute enormously for the victory of a team", he said. To develop the team consensus among the team members, everyone in the team should get involved in the discussions and decision-making process. During the discussions and decision-making process he advised that attention should be paid to everyone's opinions and suggestions. Early, quick and easy agreements should not be reached and compromises and voting should also be avoided and considering all facts a decision should be reached finally as a team", he said. |
