UNP to seek redress from Courts by Rashomi Silva The United National Party has appointed a committee of legal luminaries presided by one time Defence Minister Tilak Marapana to look into possibilities of going before the Courts and the International Community over the recently concluded presidential election. UNP Deputy Secretary Tissa Attanayake yesterday said that intimidation by the LTTE and the deletion of names from the voting list had an impact on the final verdict. "That was why we asked for a re-polling in the North-East province," he said. Attanayake said the election monitors including the European Union observers had shared that view. "We are hoping to take the report of the EU observers, to the UN and to the EU", he said. The main idea he said was not to ask for a re-poll, but to inform the public and the international community of what happened. "UNP respects democratic rights of the people and we want to draw the attention of the public and the international community about the recent poll and the impact of intimidation and wilful deletion of names on the final verdict," he added. |
