Launch of Under-19 World Cup The International Cricket Council (ICC) President Ehsan Mani, arrived in the country yesterday to launch the 6th under-19 World Cup to be staged at five venues in Colombo from February 5 to 19 which involves 16 teams and playing 44 matches during the period. The launch is to take place tomorrow (Monday) at the Crystal Ballroom of the Taj Samudra Hotel at 10.30 a.m. The tournament is conducted by the ICC in conjunction with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), and both Ehsan Mani and Duleep Mendis, SLC's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) are down to speak at tomorrow's launch. The tournament Director for the Under-19 World Cup, Bandula Warnapura, Arjuna Ranatunga (a former Sri Lanka captain now the Deputy Minister of Tourism in the UPFA Government) and Romesh Kaluwitharana (who played in the inaugural Under-19 World Cup in 1988) too will be in attendance together with various other dignitaries. This is the second occasion that Sri Lanka are hosting the Under-19 World Cup. They held it for the first time in 2000. The other countries that have staged it are Australia (1988), South Africa (1988), New Zealand (2002) and Bangladesh (2004), with previous champions being Australia (1988 and 2002), England (1988), India (2000) and Pakistan (2004). |
