Two buses fall into rivers in southern India NEW DELHI, Saturday (AFP) Almost 100 people were killed after two packed passenger buses skidded off flooded bridges in India's southern Tamil Nadu state following heavy rains, a report quoting police said Saturday. At least 50 people drowned when a state-run passenger bus was washed away by the flood waters of the swollen Sirugani river in Ramanathapuram district, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency said, quoting police. The passengers were travelling to a temple town on the inter-city bus, the report said, adding the river was high due to unseasonal rains lashing parts of coastal Tamil Nadu. In another accident, a private bus plunged into a canal at Kondikulam in Thanjavur district, killing 30 passengers on board, PTI said. Ten others, including the driver, managed to escape, police said, adding all the bodies had been recovered. The bus was carrying more than 100 people when it skidded off a bridge and overturned into the river near the town of Pattukottai. Heavy rains -- caused by low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal -- have been battering Tamil Nadu for the past several days, disrupting rail and road travel. The rains have caused widespread flooding in many parts of the state resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes in coastal districts. A coastguard helicopter was dropping food packets to marooned villagers. |
