Artistic low-cost kitchens for house - builders by L. S. A. Wedarachchi "Multi Kitchens", an award wining pantry furniture producing company introduced a new service recently for house-builders, specially housewives to build artistic low-cost kitchens. 'Multi Kitchens' plans the kitchen and its furniture according to the house owner's budget. Pantry cupboards and other furniture will be produced and supplied within a given time, said Premachandra Rupasinghe, Managing Director of Multi Kitchens (Pvt) Ltd. Having a factory at Kadawatha and the main showroom at the sixth milepost junction in Dalugama, it has spread its wings to Nawala, Malabe and Jaffna. Designing kitchens and supplying pantry furniture is a highly developed creative industry in developed countries as well as in the developing countries such as Singapore, Malasiya, Korea and India. According to Rupasinghe the creation and supply of pantry furniture was monopolised by two companies in Sri Lanka when he commenced his venture in 1979. "What I dreamt was to take away the pantry furniture business outside Cinnamon gardens rich class to other parts of the country and people, after I visited and was inspired by :Expo 79", the trade fair at the World Trade Centre in 1979 in Singapore. Highly creative Kitchens with pantry furniture from all over the world were exhibited at the Expo 79 exhibition until then I had never seen that type of elegant pantry furniture, he said. Although he was a government servant at that time he made a sample of a pantry cupboard at his garage, spending only Rs. 7,500 obtaining the workmanship of an able carpenter employed at Don Carolis and Company. His friends were impressed by the sample and placed orders. It was the base of a multi-million venture run by Premachandra Rupasinghe at present. "Most of the people who go abroad for employment have a list of prime requirements. Naturally the modern house is one of them. What they saw and were familiar with abroad, specially in Italy, UK and other European countries as well as in Middle East they hoped to have in Sri Lanka they possess various levels of wealth and they live in various parts of Sri Lanka. Multi Kitchens is willing to take any sort of creative assignment relating to pantry furniture and interior decorations, he said. After the peace accord was signed a large number of Jaffna residents employed abroad rebuilt their damaged inherited houses. Almost all the kitchens of those houses were designed and the furniture was supplied by the Jaffna branch of "Multi Kitchens". The pantry furniture was made at the Kadawatha factory where more man
fifty skilled carpenters are employed. Designing the kitchen and its
furniture only after visiting the house is the policy of Premachandra
Rupasinghe. He had visited all the renovated or newly built houses where his
pantry furniture was installed including the North during the last few
years. |
