A young Sri Lankan inventor won a gold medal for a unique rubber tapping device from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) at the 27th Exhibition of inventions held in Geneva.

Ravindra Senaratne who is the inventor of this Fabric Drier that is perhaps the first invention patented from Sri Lanka and a prototype that has been developed to a commercial product, manufactured and marketed in Sri Lanka.

In recognition of Senaratne's talents, he won a scholarship and got the opportunity to receive an international qualification at the University of Allahabad at the Faculty of Engineering, Ravi earned a BSc. degree in Mechanical Engineering. Subsequently, he was offered a lucrative job by Sri Ram Brothers', an Indian Industrial giant but opted to serve his motherland and returned to Sri Lanka.

"Hard work and failure was encountered in the journey from the first model to the marketable product. This was very difficult in a country like ours because it is still not technically developed. With the available materials, I developed the model over six years.

When I successfully developed the product, I told the Director of my employer company, Nikini Automation Systems (Pvt) Ltd," Senaratne said.

Senaratne has also obtained a patent for the product. Ravi Fabric Drier which is designed and manufactured by Rn Matrix Systems (Pvt) Ltd and distributed by Nikini Automation Systems (Pvt) Ltd is tailor-made for Sri Lankans or any country. It enables you to dry wet clothes in two-and-a-half hours.

It is easily transportable and dries 10 pieces at a time and it comes with a one-year manufacturer warranty and above all it is a pride of Sri Lanka as it is the only invention of its kind that added to world market by a Sri Lankan.

This will certainly open a new chapter in inventions in Sri Lanka and pave the way for many more inventions in Sri Lankan's journey to industrialisation.
