Protests against abduction continue in North

It is learnt that the LTTE political wing leader S. P. Thamilchelvan will summon the Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians shortly to discuss issues relating to the upcoming local polls. The meeting is expected to take place in Killinochchi within a few days. (SudarOli (SOI) - 30/01)

Trincomalee Journalist Association has decided to boycott the swearing in ceremony of the North - Eastern province governor to be held in Trincomalee today and not to cover and report on the state occasions including the Independence Day in protest of the recent killing of 'SudarOli' journalist Suhirtharajan. It is reliably learnt that Sugunam Joseph, the wife of the slain TNA parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham is likely to be appointed as an MP in place of his late husband. However, the final decision will be taken after consulting with the LTTE political wing leader, expected to take place before the end of this week. (SOI - 30/01)

The LTTE has warned that the abduction of 5 Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) employees would affect the proposed Geneva talks. (Thinakural (TK) - 01/02)

"Should the Government attempt to forcibly implement the Norochcholai coal-Power Project, we will fight against it by all means" said the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress national organizer and parliamentarian K. A. Baiz in Chilaw yesterday. (TK - 01/02)

It is said that attempts are being made to form a new Tamil political party. A news story published in connection to this says: Tamil Liberation Alliance led by V. Ananthasangari, PLOT, EPRLF (Varathar group) and a fraction of EPDP are going to form the party. (TK - 01/02)

A massive procession was held in Killinochchi yesterday condemning the abduction of TRO employees. Thousands of people took to the streets in the protest. (Virakesari (VK) - 03/02)

The panel appointed by the President to investigate the escalating violence after the presidential election has decided to obtain individual complaints from the affected. The first meeting of the panel was held yesterday. (VK - 03/02)

The "people's force" in Ampara has called on the public to observe hartal today protesting the abduction of TRO workers. The above group has also distributed leaflets warning the public they should keep no links with the Army and other paramilitary traitors functioning with them. (SOI - 03/02)

'No consensus has been reached regarding setting up the dates for the Geneva talks. Some of the reports of the media stating that the talks are scheduled to be held on February 15 and 16 have no truth in them' high-level circles of the LTTE, said. (SOI - 04/02)
