Cuban Revolution moves on

Speech of D. E. W. Gunasekera, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka from the Presidium at the Third Regional Conference of Solidarity with Cuba on 20.01.2006 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

"It is indeed a privilege and pleasure to be in the company of a galaxy of distinguished friends of Cuba and friends from Cuba.

"Today, after 47 years since the heroic Cuban Revolution, the whole world is focusing its attention, with admiration and inspiration, and deliberating with concern and seriousness as to how they should solidarize with the peoples of Cuba in their struggle for defence, survival and development.

"Of course, the Cuban Revolution has survived despite all setbacks, sanctions, embargoes, blockades and double blockades, sabotage, invasions, political assassinations etc. No other country in history had to face so many challenges, uninterruptedly for 47 long years - and that a tiny country with eleven million population situated on the threshold of the only Super - world power.

"Throughout these 47 years, we stood solidly with the Cuban people right from the day of the Cuban Revolution. Unwaveringly we extended our solidarity with them regardless of the fact that we were geographically so distanced. On the day of the attack on the Bay of Pigs and at the time of the missile crisis we were on the streets in thousands in defence of the infant Revolution.

Humanism

"The Cuban Revolution survived because it was a People's Revolution. It survived because of Cuban people's spirit of patriotism. It survived because of their spirit of internationalism.

It survived because of its pragmatism, devoid of dogmatism. It survived because of its vision and mission - aimed at humanism.

"On the occasion of this Third Regional Conference, let us concentrate and focus our attention on the two main issues before us - 'Free the Five and End the Blockade.'

"Firstly, we demand the immediate release of the five Cuban heroes imprisoned in the United States - Rene, Ramon, Gerado, Antonio and Fernando. They have been victims of a rigged trial in Miami in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

"The U.S. government is maintaining the wall of silence around this case. The international community should tirelessly and ceaselessly continue fighting for the liberation of their Cuban heroes. We call upon the U.S. people to intervene and ensure justice to the five Cubans.

"Secondly, why does U.S. continue to follow its anti-Cuban policy of blockade despite worldwide demand to abandon it?

"The U.S. Imperialism is conscious of the nature, magnitude, impact, influence and the motive force of the Cuban Revolution. Accordingly, all the U.S. Administrations since the dawn of the Revolution in 1959 have continued with their policy to destroy the Cuban Revolution.

"Even before the outbreak of the Revolution in 1959, history provides evidence that U.S. had a 'pathological' greed for Cuba. History throws some light on the real motivation of the U.S. regarding Cuba_much earlier before Cuba proclaimed its socialist orientation.

'Ripe-fruit'

"For instance, in 1808, 10-years before the birth of Karl Marx, U.S. tried to obtain from Spain the sale of its colony of Cuba. In 1823, 25-years before the first publishing of the Communist Manifesto, U.S. invented the so-called theory of "ripe-fruit", according to which Cuba was riped to be annexed to North America.

In 1898, 5-years before the Great October Revolution in Russia, U.S. imposed an amendment to the Cuban Constitution through which it stripped Cuba of part of its territory which still usurps in Guantanamo, assuming the right of interference.

Then again prior to Cold War or the emergence of the socialist system U.S. intervened several times with its occupation forces ousting governments and intervening in the internal affairs till the dawn of the Revolution in 1959. However, the heroic Cuban people since the Revolution did not allow the U.S. to behave in the manner it did earlier.

This is precisely why the U.S. embarked upon the new strategy of siege or blockade and continue with its increased intensity and vigour. This is why U.S. continues its policy of siege through Terriceli Act and Helms - Burton Act and why this policy of U.S. remains unchanged from the very inception of the Revolution.

"Simon Bolivar and Jose Marti foresaw this possible development under U.S. Imperialism and declared the need for a united and Integrated Latin America.

"During the last two decades neo-liberalism has destroyed everything where was socialism and now continue to destroy everything even where there is capitalism substituting it with a savage, barbarous, criminal, dependent form capitalist conclaves or backyards of global capital.

Impact

"Imperialism expected Cuba to fall each year. With the fall of Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, their imaginations were running riot with hopes and dreams of an end of history. Cuba under the valiant leadership of Fidel continued its relentless ideological struggle against neo-liberalism which has had its profound impact most decisively on the Latin America where neo-liberalism was first clinically tested.

Awakening of Latin America with positive changes in several countries through people's struggle can well be attributed to the ideological onslaught against neo-liberalism by Cuba. "With the emergence of Bolivian Alternative, the Latin American people as a whole will realise the cherished dream of Latin American Unity.

"We salute the Cuban leadership for the giant strides taken in the sphere of economic and social development. Through the process of rectification of errors, negative tendencies in the Special period, Cuba was able to save its revolution, the nation and socialism.

Cuba effectively introduced reforms, drawing lessons from the collapse of socialism in Europe and from the emergence of giant economy in Cuba. Cuba retained the lifeblood of the Revolution.

"Adhering to what was conceived by Jose Marti, Cuban Revolution moves on. Cuba's purest form of internationalism is a source of strength and inspiration to the working people - the world over".
