Anil on tour in States by Ananda Kannangara
In response to many requests made by Sri Lankan music lovers domiciled in the USA, popular singer Anil Bhareti left the Lankan shores to take part in a series of musical shows in the States. Singer Priya Suriyasena too joined Anil in the tour. Anil's two-month assignment commenced on (Saturday) January 21, with a musical evening at Staten Island, New York.The show was backed by a group of Sri Lankans in the USA. During his stay, Anil is expected to conduct eight musical extravaganzas in Toronto, Canada, scheduled on January 29, Los Angeles on February 11, San Francisco on February 18, Washington DC on February 24, Vancouver on February 25, Texas on March 4 and Cincinatti on March 11. Music for all shows are provided by Lankan groups, while two Sri Lankans Lucky Viswakula and Nuwan Samaranayaka will sponsor the shows. Anil who completed twenty five years of show business is a full time professional singer. He has so far released over 200 songs to his credit and has earned a reputation as a leading pop star in Sri Lanka. In an interview with the Sunday Observer, Anil said that Sri Lankans in foreign countries still remember the memories of his yesteryear songs such as Tikirimale, Ada ve Iru Dina, and the popular Christmas Carol Bethlehempura. Joining the Sing-a-long band wagon is the popular Nalin & The Star Combination who will be in live action at a special Sing-a-long organised by the Bharatha Association of Negombo in collaboration with the past pupils of Maris Stella and Ave Maria Convents of Negombo. This interesting event will be held on Saturday, February 11 at the Goldi Sands, Negombo, compered by Clifford Richards, and quite naturally the funds will be go towards the development of the schools.With an extremely wide repertoire that stretches from evergreens and yester- year hits to contemporary chart hits, Nalin and The Star Combination is an ideal band for a sing-a-long, as the members know how to give audiences many moments of happiness. The group comprises Nalin the leader on guitar and vocals, Shirmila Fonseka (daughter of the late C. D. Fonseka), the vocal glitz, Dilantha Silva - keyboards and vocals, and Hirushke Fernando a young guitarist and vocalist. A highly successful New Year's Eve Dance at the Otters Club has set the pace for the band for this year as well. Besides playing their regular gigs at the Galadari Hotel and Golden Mile, Nalin & the Star Combination are kept busy playing for weddings and private and corporate functions.
