Up-country parties unite for local polls Up country Tamil political parties and trade unions forge alliances to contest the local government elections. Parliamentarian Arumugam Thondaman's Ceylon Worker's Congress (CWC) and Upcountry People's Front led by Parliamentarian P. Chandrasekeran have already held initial talks to contest the elections in Nuwara Eliya District under a single banner. CWC Vice President R. Yogarajan told the Sunday Observer that further talks would be held to sort out the differences. At the previous local government elections these two parties contested in solo. The talks between these two political parties scheduled to be held two days ago had to be postponed due to the death of a senior member of the UPF. Meanwhile, Ceylon Worker's Alliance General Secretary S. Sathasivam said that his Union had written to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for talks to contest the polls jointly. He stated that he had received no response from the SLFP so far. Sathasivam said talks among his Union, the National Union of Workers and the Worker's Liberation Front led by Central Province Tamil Education Minister S. Arulsamy were held on Friday to forge an alliance. He said further talks will be held in a few days and this alliance hopes to contest not only in Nuwara Eliya and Badulla but also in several other districts including Ratnapura, Matale and Kandy where plantation community is largely concentrated.
