UNP readies for LG elections

by Ananda Kannangara

While anticipating a decision of the Supreme Court next week on the forthcoming Local Government (LG) Elections, whether it is to be conducted according to the year 2004 or 2005 electoral list, the United National Party last week appointed a National Nomination Board to select suitable candidates for the forthcoming Elections.

The ten- member committee comprises party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Karu Jayasuriya, N.V.K.K. Weragoda, Tissa Attanayaka, Jayawickrema Perera, P. Dayaratne, Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake, Gayantha Karunatillake, D.M. Swaminathan and Daya Perera. Speaking to the Sunday Observer, UNP Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the party will contest all Local Government divisions in the country except in the North.

"We have decided to hand over nominations to the relevant Divisional Secretariats or the Government Kachcheris on February 13, 14 and 15," he said.

Asked who will be the probable candidate for the most powerful Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Attanayake said that the names of four candidates Sirisena Cooray, Azath Sally, Omar Kamil and Hemasiri Fernando have been received and the decision will be released shortly.
