Disciplinary inquiry on Feb. 9

by Lal Gunesekera

The Disciplinary Committee inquiry into various unsavoury incidents that occurred at the finals of the Singer Professional Rugby 7's at Longden Place on January 29, was put off for Thursday (February 9) as certain persons who were to give evidence were not available. They met last Friday.

The chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Neil Wijeratne, told the Sunday Observer that members of this committee which also included Metha Abeygunawardene and Captain (Rtd) Saliya Udugama, had questioned three players (Nalaka Weerakoddy and Sanjeewa Jayasinghe of Kandy Sports Club and CH & FC's Milinda Jayasinghe) regarding the allegations of assault which led to CH & FC walking out of the field.

However, referee Dilroy Fernando (who is also the CEO of SLRFU) was not present as he was away in Hong Kong officiating in a match, while the two touch judges too were not present. CH's Shane Dullewa too had excused himself due to the short notice. Even CH's trainer, Ravindra Athukorale who was involved in the fracas had left the country for New Zealand on January 30.

30 players contracted

Meanwhile, 30 national pool players have been categorised into three groups by the selectors and are being paid an allowance from this month (February) upto the Asiad in Colombo at the end of the year. The tier 1 players get Rs. 15,000 per month, tier 2 Rs. 10,000 per month and tier 3 Rs. 5000 per month.

SLRFU's CEO, Dilroy Fernando, said that they will also be paid "match fees" separately and George Simpkin (national coach) and the team management helped the selectors in categorising the 30 players.

He further said that contracts too were to be signed soon between the SLRFU and the players, but they will have to be punctual at practices and face a fitness test every month.
