Rehman wins fourth national title

by Lal Gunesekera

Bangladesh's wonderboy Siddiq-ur-Rehman added his fourth national title to the ones already earned in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, when he emerged champion at the 118th Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship last week at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort in Kandy with a even par four-round total of 292 beating former Sri Lanka title holder K. Prabagaran from Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club by just one stroke.

The tournament was co-sponsored by United Tractors and CML Edwards Construction. The excitement did not end here with the old war horses (aged 55 years and over) battling it out in perfect weather conditions after a rain hampered first-round the previous day for the senior championships.

First-round leaders Errol Johnston (gross 82), Ian Nalder (gross 84) and Ian Tait (gross 89) playing together in the last flight, provided plenty of excitement in the final round in a ding-dong manner.

However, it was Victoria's resident golfer Ian Tait who played the perfect wedge and aced the short but challenging par 34th hole, who used this momentum and all his experience and home course knowledge to make up the lost ground over the next 15 holes to beat Errol Johnston by one stroke clinching the seniors title and the Havelock Trophy for the best gross score over two rounds.

Errol Johnston (nett 148) with his 10 handicap walked away with the Dr. L. V. R. Fernando Trophy for the best nett score for seniors over two rounds. Ian Nalder at the age of 73 years carried an amazing handicap of just 8 ran out of steam, but still managed third position in the gross division and also managed to hang on to the runner-up spot in the nett category with 156 over, Ian Tait and S. Kasturiratne who were joint third with nett 157.
