Dhammika Alwis - an ideal prefect of games

by Upananda Jayasundera, Kandy Sports Special Corr

This is somewhat unique - both husband and wife are Prefect of Games of their respective schools. Chandra Mahawattage is Prefect of Games at St. Anthony's College, Katugastota while his wife - Dhammika Alwis is Prefect of Games of Mahamaya College, Kandy.

The husband and wife duo have helped their respective schools to forge ahead in sports due to their commitment towards sports and the schools concerned have gained much from their knowledge in sports and their good planning of events.

Dhammika Alwis is one of the finest sportswomen produced by Mahamaya in 1970 where she represented the schools in athletics, netball, basketball, badminton and hockey.

She had a thorough knowledge in sports activities and she was rightly appointed Prefect of Games at the school in 1997 and has held the post ever since.

She was not merely involved in the administrative activities, but had a good knowledge in netball as she represented of Sri Lanka between 1970 and 1981 as a centre as well as wing attack. Dhammika had good contemporaries like Hyacinth Wijesinghe, Dhammika Norbert, Ginadari Liyanage, Kamala Kulatilleke, to name a handful of names that comes to mind at the mere mentioning of netball.

She was a member of the Sri Lanka team that toured India in 1980. But before that, Dhammika Alwis was picked to tour Seashells in 1972 and England in 1979, but could not make the two tours.

In basketball, she represented of Central Province Schools and also followed a coaching course in 1974. In athletics, her pet event was long jump and she won this event in the 1973 All-Island Schools Meet and she went one step further when she won the best athlete's award at the All Island Teacher's meet in 1978.

She has also represented Central Province Schools in hockey and badminton. She is doing a fine job in her capacity of Prefect of Games at Mahamaya and had brought up the school to national level in swimming and netball.

Dhammika is of the view that sports cannot improve unless the parents take an active interest in the activities of their children. Dhammika's father - Francis Alwis has been the guiding light to get success in sport. Francis Alwis captained Dhsrmaraja soccer team and was also a leading cricketer and hockey player.
