Cross section of views on SLFP, UNP MoU: UNP should help Govt. bring
about lasting solution
by Ananda Kannangara

Residents of Kollupitiya, Maradana and the outstations when
interviewed by the Sunday Observer on the outcome of the MoU signed by
the SLFP and the UNP said that the proceedings of the pact were very
slow as expected by people.
Many of them said that it was high time for the UNP to start their
campaign and help the Government to bring about a lasting solution to
the crisis.
Here is a cross section of views:
A make up artist Anil Prasanga (34) said the UNP too could have asked
for representation at the recent peace talks in Geneva.
"I propose the UNP leadership would ask at least two members to be
included in the next peace delegation.
A businessman from Wattala Mohamad Nazeer said that if President
Mahinda Rajapaksa really wants the support of Ranil Wickremesinghe to
solve the problem, he should appoint the latter as the Prime Minister.
So that, he could get involved in this matter in the capacity of Prime
Minister.
A school teacher Ms. Rangani Madushanka said although the UNP leader
wants to fulfil the Government's expectations, several others have
opposed him.
She said those who asked for portfolios were opportunists.
A machine operator, Gamini Rupasinghe (41) said that the opposition
leader should display his gesture towards the invitation and in response
he must support the President wholeheartedly.
"Ranil has more international connections than others, therefore he
must at least visit foreign countries regularly and educate the foreign
leaders on this matter and weaken the Tigers, he said.
A sales assistant, Madushika Harshani from Katunayake said despite a
few incidents, she could see a significant improvement in the country's
security situation after signing the MoU.
So I hope Ranil will directly get involved in the matter and solve
the problem with the President soon.
A music teacher, Mallika Pushpa Kanthi said even though two weeks
have passed after signing the MoU, we cant see any good work done by the
UNP to bring about a solution.
"Therefore I appeal to Mr. Wickremesinghe to take immediate steps to
help the President to bring peace to our land," she said.
A housewife, Irosha Senani said, it seemed there was a small dispute
within the UNP. Therefore the UNP leadership must resolve that matter
first before he gets involved in the national problem.
A 64-year-old carpenter from Panadura said in addition to signing the
MoU, the UNP must also accept portfolios. Then, they will also hold
responsibility in the government.
