Restrictions on women highlighted
by Ananda Kannangara
The unnecessary restrictions imposed on women in society and various
other social discriminations faced by them were highlighted by a
well-known lawyer, Kalinga Indatissa at a meeting in Colombo last week.
He was speaking at the launch of a book titled `Kanthawa ha Nithiya'
(Women and Law), written by an Attorney-at-law, Rocky Ariyaratne. The
book gives a critical view of the law and practices on women in Sri
Lanka. Indatissa said that responsible officials still focus poor
attention on social problems faced by women and it is their duty to look
into these matters in a proper way.
"As we are aware women in general undergo several social hardships
including sexual harassments and violence.
The `Kanthawa ha Nithiya' is the Sinhala translation of `Women and
Law', written by the author in English. When writing the book, the
author Rocky Ariyaratna focused special attention on sexual harassment,
rape, prostitution and bigamy, faced by women and also social problems
faced by migrant workers.
The book also gives a comprehensive view on marriages, divorce and
the violation of fundamental rights of women.
Judge of the Court of Appeal S.I. Imam commended the author Rocky
Ariyaratne for publishing such a valuable book for the benefit of all
concerned including lawyers, university students and officials in the
Police Department. |
