Over Rs. 5b allocated for CDMA project

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication has allocated over Rs. 5
billion for the CDMA roll-out project to boost the telecommunication
sector. The project was committed for the investment targeting 225 base
stations to cover the whole Island.
The CDMA will give wide coverage to the North, East and other parts
of the country. Already it has erected 170 towers. A tower costs over Rs.
8 million. According to Ministry sources, there are 240,000 subscribers
using the CDMA technology.
The Ministry is targeting 300,000 subscribers by the end of this
year. The Ministry is also planning to complete over 50 towers by the
end of this year. |
