21st SAARC Charter Day
The SAARC Women's Association - Sri Lanka Chapter was formed in 1996
to promote friendship, harmony and cultural activities between the women
from this region.
We observed the SAARC Charter Day on the 8th of December. The Charter
of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was
signed at Dhaka in 1985 by leaders of the seven South Asian countries
with a common resolve to build a peaceful and prosperous South Asia
through mutual understanding, good neighbourly relations and cooperation
among the seven South Asian nations.
We, members of the SAARC Women's Association - Sri Lanka Chapter have
taken this commitment by our leaders seriously and in our own way,
continue to forge relations between the women in South Asian countries
by building bridges of friendship amongst them.
In furtherance to the achievement of this objective, the Association
organized the event, Streets of SAARC on November 12 at the Cinnamon
Grand , which showcased the entertainment from each country, observed on
the sidewalks and streets.
The purpose of this project was to raise funds for the care of the
elderly and also to celebrate a decade of SAARC Women's Association in
this country.
