ICTA national conference mid year
The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA)
annual national conference is scheduled to take place mid-year. The
conference will touch on `National Capacity Building' and be the first
of other fora to follow.
It is part of the ICT Capacity Building Program (ICBP), a program
implemented by the Information and Communication Technology Agency of
Sri Lanka (ICTA). This is part of three initiatives totalling $5.2
million intended to boost the ICT industry; the funds come from the
World Bank, ICTA chairman, Prof. V. K. Samaranayaka said.
The conference will have a `hands-on' practical focus rather than a
theoretical focus. Its objective being to identify opportunities and
challenges of human resources in the ICT capacity.
It is also intended to create awareness and understanding of industry
best practices that could be implemented to overcome obstacles. Also, to
harness the country's potential to build HR capacity for the industry.
Program manager of ICTA, Fayaz Hudah, said the conference would
proceed with sessions conducted among industry nominated professionals,
to asses the current and future HR capacity the ICT industry holds.
The conference, itself, through discussions with CEOs and
policymakers of the ICT industry would validate findings of these
sessions and recommend strategies to address issues and how the
government, academic and industry should contribute to bridge the gap.
Earlier, Minister of Science and Technology, Prof Tissa Vitharna said
that Sri Lanka was far behind India in ICT and should attempt to
consolidate in some niche areas.
A career fair will also take place concurrently, targeting students,
those who influence the industry, parents, and teachers of ICT.
The career fair would promote career opportunities in ICT companies
as well as provide information on ICT education and study courses
required to gain competency to work in the ICT industry, Hudah said.
The conference is expected to be distinctive, with the coming
together of the five IC Industry associations, ACTOS, ATOCIA, SEA, SLASI
and SLCVA.
