Campaign to promote safety in public transport

A sticker campaign to promote safety and create a sense of awareness
among the public while travelling by public transport was launched by
the Mount Lavinia police on Friday.
The campaign was inaugurated by SSP Mount Lavinia Division Willie
Abeynaike who pasted the first sticker on a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB)
bus opposite the Mount Lavinia police station.
HQI Mount Lavinia police, Inspector, Mahesh Perera said that they
hope to paste around 3,000 stickers on SLTB buses initially to educate
the public on the hazards posed by terrorist elements in congested
suburban areas. The sticker campaign was mooted by SSP Willie Abeynaike.
The sticker warns the public to be vigilant about suspicious persons
carrying parcels or any other objects with them in buses. "The idea was
that people will have to look after themselves.
Terrorists were out to cause mayhem and destruction to property. The
public has to be vigilant at all times before they could strike at
them," he said.
HQI Perera said that they hope to initially paste 3,500 stickers in
private and public buses and later expand it to 10,000 stickers. The
sticker campaign is assisted under the Maga-Naguma programme. |
