Keells Super launches reusable 'Red Bag'

In keeping with their firm belief in environmental protection and pollution control, Keells Super launched an attractive reusable 'Red Bag' at their Keells Super Outlet at the Crescat Boulevard.

Made out of non-woven material, the Red Bag is branded with the Keells Super logo and their new Mr. Tree logo which depicts the Keells Super GSR commitment.

The launch of this reusable bag further enhances Keells Super's commitment to be an environmentally friendly organisation. Keells Super has always been mindful of the growing threat of plastics and polythene to the environment and this is another one of their socially responsible commitments towards cleaner and safer surroundings.

Dr. Ajantha Perera, Founder - National Program on Recycling of Solid Waste, praised the Management of Keells Super for their initiative towards preserving the environment by introducing the Red Bag and thereby eliminating the need for non-biodegradable bags.

"This is a great initiative and others should use this as an example to safeguard our environment from non-biodegradable materials," she said. She also told the media that the hazards of polythene and plastics are a growing threat and should be addressed seriously.

A special guest at the launch BBC World Challenge winner Thusitha Ranasinghe, an ardent advocate of environmental protection stressed the need for more stringent pollution control and endorsed the stance taken by Keells Super as a valuable example to other service organisations. Ranasinghe won the 2006 BBC World Challenge award for his ingenuity in reusing elephant dung for various paper products.

Sumithra Gunasekara, Director - John Keells Holdings who overlooks the CSR activities of the Group said this initiative was a much needed effort on behalf of the environment.

"This is the first time any supermarket chain has undertaken such a proactive program to reduce the environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable material. We hope that this project helps us make a meaningful contribution towards reducing the damage caused to our environment, and look forward to the support of our customers to make this project a success," he said.
