Mobitel launches M3 high speed technology
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the national mobile service provider
launched the M3 'super 3.5G' high speed access mobile network service on
Wednesday.
The High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology provides data at a
downlink rate up to 7.2 Mbps and an uplink rate up to 1.92 Mbps with the
use of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and a High Speed Uplink
Packet Access (HSUPA) technologies.
The M3 service enables customers to download and upload large files
such as email attachments within a shorter time than on 2.5G or 3G
platforms.
CEO Mobitel Suren J. Amarasekera said the new technology is more than
a business model and will help customers to access information quicker.
"Customer centricity is a key factor and our innovations are
supported by value additions" he said.
The company which covers 60 per cent of the population targets around
90 per cent within the next few months.
Huawei Technologies of China was awarded the contract to set up the
super 3.5G network of Mobitel. The network covers Colombo and most major
cities. The investment of US$ 200 million has been made on the 2.5G and
3.5G networks.
