Fancy jewellery
by Lakmal Welabada
"To spend seven to ten thousand rupees for a piece of fancy jewellery
which has no guarantee! Woof!" the devastating look on my colleague's
face made me curious.
"And the same item was available at a fancy shop in the suburb for Rs.
1500 - 2000. And if you go to Pettah it would be cheaper," she said.
"Spending such a lot for a piece of jewellery is a waste of money.

An utter waste!" she exclaimed. "But, on the other hand, some have to
maintain their status. such a large amount is not a big deal for moneyed
people. It's all based on the fame of the business outlet which they buy
the item and the price, said Kumar another colleague. "Middle-class
people who wants to maintain their status are the victims of such big
fancy businesses," he continues.
Jewellery has been in the top of the priority list of women since the
beginning of the human civilisation. apart from a few among them, almost
every woman loves to wear jewellery.
It would be hard to find a woman in the world who has not worn a
piece of 'jewellery' in her life time. Sorry! not merely women,
jewellery is in some ways a part of men as well, because at least
married men wear a ring.
Wearing jewellery and giving jewellery as a gift have been a custom
in many cultures. Hence jewellery has become one of the largest
businesses around the world.
People use Jewellery to display their status, and spend Millions and
Billions of money on them. Those who cannot afford to spend lavishly
tend to go by the lesser priced items.

Hence, from time to time Fancy jewellery is in fashion. Indian
jewellery made of pieces of copper wire and glass beads seems to be in
style at present.
The Year end festive season is not merely a time of celebration for
Christians. This is because many events including year-end get togethers
and dances which will be held shortly are also some of the happenings in
the town.
And this is the time that Glamour reigns, and along with the elegant
attires, fancy jewellery also gets to be in high demand.
But it's time to be wise. Do we have to get caught to these business
tricks? "I make my jewellery by myself.
They may not be so elegant with an extreme finish, but they are
unique, I suppose, and gives me self satisfaction as I wear the
jewellery I make on my own," says Thushari. "How do you find the time?"
asks Malathi. Time is no problem, if you have a little bit of
creativity. You would save hundreds and thousands.
