Bharti Airtel Lanka signs $ 100 m Investment Agreement with BOI

Dr. Sarath Amunugama

Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, one of the leading telecom services providers in the world, said that it has signed a USD 100 million investment agreement with the Board of Investment Sri Lanka (BOI).

This is the second phase of the company’s commitment to invest US $ 200 Million in Sri Lanka over the next five years.

The investment will enable Bharti Infratel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel Lanka, to roll out all passive infrastructure necessary to gear the company for launch of its services and underlines the company’s commitment to deliver quality services to the mobile subscriber market in Sri Lanka.

Under the patronage of the Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion, Dr. Sarath Amunugama the investment agreement was signed by Dhammika Perera Chairman/Director General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and Olof Haag, Chairman and Country Head, Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. and Mrs. Amali Nanayakkara, CEO, Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

“Today, we strengthen our commitment in taking the telecommunications industry in Sri Lanka to new heights.

The implementation of the passive infrastructure with this investment, covering radio communication towers, generators and shelters will not only strengthen Bharti Airtel Lanka, but will also resource other players who may opt to employ our infrastructure in deploying their services in the future as well.

This initiative will open an era of infrastructure sharing, inviting all players to leverage what we have set in motion,” Olof Haag said. “The support we have received from the BOI, TRCSL, the CEA and other agencies of the Government of Sri Lanka in this regard are truly appreciated,” he said.

Dr. Amunugama said, “The investment will no doubt strengthen the future of the industry and further enhance the already vibrant telecommunications market in Sri Lanka. We are encouraged by the efforts made by Bharti Airtel Sri Lanka in this regard”
