Compensation for farmers hit by rains

The Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board (AAIB) has sent teams to five districts which were affected by heavy rains to assess the damage and pay compensation, said Chairman, AAIB Mervin Gunasena.

The AAIB has received claims for insurance compensation from policy-holders in Polonnaruwa, Mannar, Trincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa with the largest number from the Batticaloa District.

Claims will be settled immediately after assessing the damage. AAIB teams comprise the Agriculture Ministry, Agrarian Services Department, Agriculture Department and the farmer representatives from the area, he said.

Acting Secretary, Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services, Kamala Uyanwatta said that the Government Agents in the affected districts have been requested to submit reports to the Ministry on paddy lands affected by the rain.
