Three schoolboys from Kandy in the National Sevens Rugby Pool
By Shamseer Jaleel
There were five schools in the Singer Schools division ‘A’ this year.
Out of those Kingswood became champions and Trinity became runners-up.
Three lads from these two schools were rewarded for their fine
performance in this season.
Roshan Weeraratne (Kingswood), Viswajith Wijesinghe and Ruzul Ramzeen
(both from Trinity) were the selected players in the initial pool of 22
in preparation for the Singer-SriLankan Airlines Sevens in September and
then later in October they will feature in the Rugby World Cup 2009
Qualifying Sevens in Hong Kong. Roshan Weeraratne who operated from the
base had a grand season for the Randles Hill school being behind most of
their victories.
He got the slight edge over the Trinity scrum half Habeeb Hameed.
Ruzni Ramseen was tower of strength and the pack leader of the Trinity
“Lions” in this season. He was an excellent player in loose as well as
in attack.
The third player selected from Kandy was the dashing winger of
Trinity Viswajith Wijesinghe.
He is yet another making of a Sanjeewa Jayasinghe. His powerful run,
down the line and his hand off was an eye catcher this season. All these
players are certain to make the national youth team for the Junior Asiad
in Korea later in the year.
The other two school boys selected were Sajith Saranga (Isipathana)
and Jerad Canute (St. Peter’s). |
