The British Computer Society (BCS) Sri Lanka Section held its National Best Quality Software Awards 2008 for the 10th occasion at the Water's Edge at Battaramulla.

The Membership Director of the British Computer Society of the United Kingdom John Orton was the chief guest.

Chairman BCS Sri Lanka Section, Sujeewa Dissanayake said 40 products from 31 companies including those from five universities and tertiary education institutes competed for the awards this year.

The difficult task of selecting the winners was done by a panel of judges from the industry and the academia.

He said the British Computer Society Sri Lanka Section was active since 1996 and has 4,000 IT professionals, students, members and 150 IT practising chartered members.

Dr. Madurasinghe, the former chairman of the BCS Sri Lanka section initiated the event in 1998 to showcase and benchmark Sri Lankan software.

"As an IT professional I like to encourage all participants to develop more and more world-class products with high quality standards to penetrate the international markets."

The British Computer Society (BCS) of UK, which represents those who work in the information technology was set up in 1957. It was incorporated by a Royal Charter in 1984 which has a worldwide membership of over 65,000 members.

BCS, UK is a qualifying body for Chartered IT professionals.

The award ceremony was sponsored by Microsoft, Dialog, Bank of Ceylon, Intel, IFS and others.

Orton said Sri Lanka was important for the British Computer Society (BCS) as much as BCS was to Sri Lanka.

"I believe there will be more to each other's growth in the coming years. Sri Lanka was the most successful section of all sections.

This was my second visit to Sri Lanka and was delighted to be here, he said.

Lanka joins Internet bidding

Hemaka Amarasuriya

Singer Sri Lanka launched the Internet auction site to enable customers to join the world of bidding and competing as in other established auction sites.

Chairman, Singer Sri Lanka, Hemaka Amarasuriya said while online auction sites have been internationally well established, Sri Lanka has been late in joining the world of Internet bidding.

The site is already operational and has been designed with the latest safety and data protection systems to ensure online payments are safe and secure.

Bids will start at a reserve price set below the retail selling price. The auctions will be time bound giving the bidders two weeks to up their bids and claim the coveted products.Payments have to be made by credit cards.

Low Internet and credit card penetration have dissuaded local companies from launching online auction sites along the lines of Eday and Prosper.

"Singer is confident that the auction site will be a successful innovation introduced to the retail spectrum in the country", Amarasuriya said. LF
