Cargills Food City turns 25
Cargills Food City, Sri Lanka’s pioneer modern retailer and second
most valuable brand in the country as per the Brand Finance Index
ratings of 2008,will celebrate 25 years today and is ready to unveil a
once in a life time celebration with exciting competitions, cash gifts
and discount offers.
The company first ventured into organised retail in 1983 and changed
the norm by taking what was traditionally an ‘affluent’ focused business
to the masses. Today this strategy has accrued benefits not only to the
company’s shareholders but also its consumers and local communities.
Through this strategy, what started off as a single supermarket store
has expanded to cover 160 locations in 22 districts as retail,
restaurants, manufacturing units and fresh produce collection centres.
Today the Cargills Food City market share in organised retail has
grown above 50%. Cargills Food City uses this widespread retail network
coupled with its direct link with the agricultural community and small
and medium entrepreneurs to bring affordable and nutritious food to all
Sri Lankans.
Chief Executive Officer of Cargills, Ranjit Page said, “Cargills
prices are consistent across the island and the company aims to take its
retail arm to all 25 districts to ensure that the benefits of its ‘high
quality low priced’ strategy are enjoyed by consumers islandwide.”
