The Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) signed an agreement to launch the E-learning program with AIT's Internet Education and Research Laboratory and the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to offer distant education programs for urban and sacred area development.

This initiative was taken following a visit by the Urban and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardana to the AIT in Bangkok in May .

A number of other distant learning programs on cultural heritage, urban planning, and geo-informatics will be on offer to the ministry and UDA staff through IN&ER lab.

This agrement will help enhance the human resource and professional qualification of Sri Lanka's workforce, specially in public sector.

Minister Gunawardana said "under the Mahinda Chinthana" the government is taking steps to enhance the quality of professionals and staff in government institutions, while introducing advanced technology for research and development.

AIT's aim is to be partner in enhancing and delivering best programs to Sri Lankan professionals.
