He said that in the developed world ERP solutions are well known and
used while in the developing world it is less known and practised.
Yet in the developed world many companies and banks have failed due
to the financial crisis as the ERP did not blend the knowledge of a
subject specialist and integrate the core business solution to the ERP.
In every business there is a risk and during a downturn if a company
which blindly follows the leader will have the solution.
Modern day ERPs are intelligent to give a profile of a situation or a
person based on the overall information and this will help, a company to
adopt a calculated risk.
In addition, today’s ERPs push solutions rather than a customer
pulling the information. A modern day ERP solution should be able to
blend the subject knowledge of a subject specialist to the ERP and guide
users.
The core business should also be integrated to the ERP. He said that
ERPs were born to evaluate company performance and guide the users in
the best business practices but today an ERP solution is much more than
that.
A good ERP will provide a profile of every scenario at all times
while it is transparent. In business the first casualty is transparency.
De Silva said that a ERP should provide a total scenario to the
subject specialist while it should show the CEO all the bleeding points.
In addition the core business should be given priority.
He said “Don’t take decisions in isolation and if you take a decision
based on the available information considering the total scenario the
risk is much less. In Sri Lanka there is a huge potential to buy a
business solution and it is the best time to invest in a good ERP
solution. The system should expose the bleeding points but don’t replace
the experts.
Most importantly the ERP will integrate all systems into one globe.
He said that tough times call for smart investments and IFS has done
a lot of studies on how IFS could help the companies in difficulty.
CEO’ s earlier were in comfort zones and never tried to exploit new
markets but facing challenges should be done on a daily basis without
waiting for a crisis situation as thinking ahead is necessary to survive
in these tough times. He said that maintenance as well as preventive
maintenance is necessary.
