Trinity pulled off a hard fought 43 (5 goals, 1 try and a penalty) to
33 (4 goals, 1 try) win against St. Peter's in their Schools Under-20
League Rugger Tournament played at Bambalapitiya yesterday.
The Kandy school who lost to S. Thomas' last week had to pull off all
their resources to save their blushes after the Peterites launched a
terrific fight back in the second-half scoring 26 points.
The Trinitians played with cohesion in the first-half with their
three-quarters giving them the cutting edge. They played a terrific game
in attack and defence and drove the Peterites into submission.
Trinity planted three tries in the first seven minutes of the game
when Cannon Armstrong, Akila Dissanayake and Duminda Nanayakkara pierced
through the Peterite defence. Armstrong gave the extra points on all
three occasions.
The Trinity three-quarters ran the ball and displayed good ball
handling and also played well in picking up the loose ball.
The Peterites forwards too, gave a determined display driving into
rucks and mauls and scored nearing the half-time when flanker Chamath
Madurawela touched down for Sandun Herath to add the extra points.
Hooker Damith Dissanayake struck for Trinity off a short tap which
Armstrong converted and Cannon Armstrong breezed through for an
unconverted try.
Trinity led 33-7 at the breather.
On resumption the Peterites came back strongly with their forwards
and the back division combining well for the first time in the match.
Fly half Banuka Nanayakkara reduced the lead scoring a try which Sandun
Herath added the extra points. The other tries were scored by Sandun
Herath, D. Ranjan and S. Anthony. Trinity's second-half try was scored
by Cannon Armstrong which was converted by him.
Referee: Aruna Jayasekera.
