Sri Lanka's first fully locally constructed Orugodawatte flyover will
be opened next month. This would be the longest flyover in Sri Lanka
with 630 metres in length and four lanes. The project was designed by
Moratuwa University and is being supervised by the engineers of the Road
Development Authority. The total cost of the project is Rs. 350 million.
Project Consultant, T. Danthanarayane said that another unique feature
of this is that 80 percent of raw material for the project was from Sri
Lanka. "New technology conforming to international standards has been
used. The bridge is expected to have a life-span of more than 120
years," he said.
For the first time two service road lanes too have been included to
facilitate maintenance.
Three other flyovers are planned for Kohuwala, Dehiwela and
Rajagiriya. Both Nugegoda and Kelaniya flyover were constructed using
imported steel. Each project did cost more than Rs. 2.2 billion and took
around four months to be completed. He said that the next flyovers could
be constructed within span of nine months as the workforce have got used
to flyover technology.
