We witnessed spontaneous celebrations throughout the island when our
valiant Security Forces defeated the world’s most ruthless terrorists
last week. The youth were in the forefront of these celebrations
and in the forefront of the battle against terrorism, for it is the
brave sons and daughters of Mother Lanka who defeated the LTTE after an
arduous journey from the banks of Mavil Aru to the beaches of Mullaitivu.
Panorama spoke to several youth leaders to gauge their perceptions on
this historic victory and the way forward for the Motherland.

We are grateful for our Forces and the President for making this
possible. We at Triads hail the victory more so because we worked hand
in hand with the Ministry of Defence in our campaign for ‘Api wenuwen
api’, and it’s a campaign we all strongly believed in. We always
believed that we can achieve this.
As the President said there are no races in Sri Lanka anymore. So we
have to communicate this message to the other communities of our
country.
The recent military victory is an example for all those grumblers.
This proves that we could achieve anything if we put our minds to it.
With this new perception anything is possible, we can all chip in to
make a difference. |

Sri Lanka has marked its victory against one of the most brutal
terrorist organizations in the world. And as a very patriotic person I
am simply elated. But this is half the battle. Now it is our time to win
hearts. We have to learn to treat every Tamil with respect, like our own
brothers and sisters. After all we are all only human.
I feel very sorry for the innocent children who have got stuck in the
middle of all this. And I would do everything in my power to make them
happy and create a better environment for them. We have to instill moral
values in our children. We have to flourish economically, industrially
and in every other aspect. And this cannot be achieved as long as we are
separated. We all have to pull together.
This country belongs to all of us. And we have to think as only ‘Sri
Lankans’. |
Duminda Dissanayake -
Minister
The youth of this country and the generation yet to born are the ones
that are most benefited by the end of this war, thanks to President
Mahinda Rajapaska, the Defense Secretary and all our military personnel.
We have been able to put an end to a 33 year old war, in spite all
the international intimidations and we are still going strong. Now we
all - despite differences of caste, creed, religion or race - have a
duty towards our country. |

We are indebted to the President, Defence Secretary and all military
personnel for achieving this endeavour.
As a young artiste I am ecstatic that this war - that lasted more
than my age! - has finally ended.
As a people with a history of self-sustenance Sri Lanka should from
now on focus more on being more self-sustained.
We should forget racial, religious and caste differences and make an
effort to develop as one country. |

Public Relations Consultant
As President Mahinda Rajapaksa rightly said there are only two races
in Sri Lanka from now on - the ‘Patriots’ and the ‘Non-Patriots’. The
time has come for everyone of us to think of ourselves as the Sons and
Daughters of one Nation and NOT as people belonging to different ethnic
and religious groups.
The past has been very hard and very difficult for ALL of us -
Burghers, Muslims, Tamil and Sinhalese. If we are able to transcend our
man-made barriers and unite as a common people, we will succeed.
We initially need to sincerely reach out as individuals and do our
bit for one another without waiting for Government agencies to do
everything. The sad question is how many of us are able to, or rather,
willing to do so?
This is also a time for great resurgence in economic and social
growth. With the North and East opening up and becoming more accessible
to the South and the rest of the world, the potential is great. We need
to seize it and make it happen. The time is ripe, the moment opportune.
It is now or never for Sri Lanka. We can do it. So let’s. |
Nehara Peiris -

It’s a relief just to walk on the road without the fear of being
killed from a bomb explosion. With the end of a 33 year old war, the
economic development of our country is inevitable. |
