The respect for Clarence Wijewardene the singer/guitarist and for his
immemorial pastoral songs continues to live in the hearts of music
lovers and musicians. Many singers of yesteryear and today perform his
songs at concerts giving credit to his rare creativity.
Recently the well-known producer of shows Damayantha Kuruppu, now
turned singer having released a CD of duets with Mariazelle, recorded
and released his first Sinhala CD titled Suhadenene which he dedicated
to his idol Clarence Wijewardena.
“I am grateful to Clarence’s wife Sheila Wijewardena and Siri
Hettiarachchi for granting me permission to re-record the song Sihinen
which was composed and sung by him. I thought it fit that I dedicate the
CD to him because it was he who put me on the track of music. By
profession I was a trained hotelier and I never thought I would branch
out into music.
I consider him my mentor and the title track of the CD Suhadenene is
the greatest tribute I can pay to him” says Damayantha who is happy he
has fulfilled a long standing ambition of his.The CD Suhadenene contains
twelve tracks the music for which was composed and arranged by Thushara
Kuruwitige who was also responsible for the vocal harmonies.
“The songs are based on my personal experiences and I have one
dedicated to my parents `Demapiyan’ and my two sons - Isuru and Asitha
concludes Damayantha. From the CD the song Mal Kelle has been created
into a video and is now receiving air play on the TV stations. As for
future shows the public are in for a surprise at the end of the year, we
understand. |
