Sri Lanka is blessed with a wealth of beautiful waterfalls that can
even compete with any other in the world. While being a haven for rich
biodiversity and a home for endemic species to thrive, Sri Lanka is
definitely one of the world’s best nature hot spots. The island is home
to 103 rivers and streams meandering from the central hills, rushing
down rocky precipices and forming a number of gorgeous waterfalls of
various shapes and heights, ending up at the Indian Ocean.
Diyaluma Falls - Sri Lanka’s second highest, Diyaluma is on the
Poonagala Oya river off the Koslanda - Wellawaya road which is yet
another amazing sight. It is 559 ft in height with a beautiful backdrop.
Legend has it that the Gods, upon hearing of a heartbroken prince whose
lover died, committed suicide jumping over the Diyaluma precipice,
creating this beautiful cascade.
Laxapana Falls - The great waterfall known as Laxapana is 377 feet
high and it is close to the Hatton and Laxapana Valley. The Laxapana
valley is a very famous water valley in Sri Lanka which provides
hydro-electric power to the country. It falls from Samanala mountains.
Bambarakanda Ella - The highest waterfall in Sri Lanka is about 800
feet high. The falls are most stunning during October to March when
heavy rains turn to an impressive, unbroken deluge. The main access to
the falls is along a minor but mortable road via Haputale and
Kalupahana. There is a shortcut from Ohiya but the road is not in a good
condition.
St. Claire Falls - The widest waterfall in Sri Lanka which is about
265 feet high. St.Claire is the name of the tea estate where it rests
amidst the cool climes of Thalawakele, Nuwara Eliya. Starting from the
Kothmale river, the rock ledge, divides into three cascades, and plunges
into a pool, producing veils of vapour.
Dunhinda Falls
