Navy women stickers in fine start

Navy Sports Club `A' women's stickers in their maiden appearance in
women's pulled off a great 2-1 win over Colts Sports Club Colombo in
their All-Island Inter Club Seven-a-side Bank of Ceylon Super Sevens
Hockey Tournament organized by Seetha Devie Balika Vidyalaya at the
Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday. The tournament will continued today
at 8 a.m.
In the schools Tournament Defending Champions Pushpadana girl
college, Kandy scraped through to a 2-1 win over Christ Church College,
Matale in the tournament for girls.
Pushpadana scored their goals through R. L. Liyanage (1) and C.
Ekanayake (1) while N. G. Hemamali sounded the boards for Christ Church
College.
28 for chess nationals

Fourteen men and fourteen women competitors will vie for honours at
the National Chess Championships to be worked out at the Engineering
Institute, Pelawaththa on June 5,6,7,8,12,13 and 14.
The tournament is sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom. Last year's
champions were Athula Razel (men), Vineetha Wijesuriya (women). The
indoor sport of chess, a brain teaser and a demanding sport
internationally which has produced grandmasters like Bobby Fisher,
Antoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov among others, has made much inroads in
Sri Lanka with competitors in their numbers reaching over the chess
board to make a name.
Army ‘A’ in 1-0 win over Old Sebastians

RUGBY: Defending champions Sri Lanka Army `A’ were made to fight all
the way before posting a close 1-0 win over Old Sebastian Sports Club,
Kandy on the opening day of the Bank of Ceylon Super Sevens, Mens’
Seven-a-Side hockey Tournament organised by Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya
which began at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half-time
there was no scoring.
Sri Lanka Army scored their winning goal through S.S. Jayasinghe in
the minute after lemons.
In the boys event Ananda College, Colombo scored a good 2-0 win over
St. Sylvester’s College in the tournament of boys schools. Goal getters
for Ananda College were C. Nilaweera (1) and A. Pathirana (1)
Sri Lanka cancel Oxford visit over security fears
Less than three months after their team bus came under terrorist
gunfire in Lahore, members of the Sri Lankan cricket team have withdrawn
from a scheduled visit to Oxford due to security concerns. Muttiah
Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and team manager Brendon Kuruppu informed
the Oxford Union debating society on Friday they feared a backlash after
a front-page story in the `Times’ in which it was claimed that 20,000
Tamil civilians had been killed in recent hostilities between government
troops and LTTE.
Cager quarter-finalists found
De Lasalle College Muttwall beat Colombo South International School
91 to 90 in a closely contested game to enter the quarter-finals of the
Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association `C’ Division Tournament at
Modara yesterday.
It was a late rally that helped the victors who were trailing 18-34
at half-time. Nipun Roshan (46) and Nipul Lakshitha (14) were
outstanding for the winners while Lakshan Mendis scored 24 for Colombo
South International School. In another encounter played at St. Joseph’s
Boys School, Nugegoda, St. Aloysius College, Galle trounced Lyceum
Intertioanl, Wattala 52-23 after leading 33-8 at half-time. Kingswood
College and Gateway Kandy, St. Joseph’s Enderamulla, St Joseph’s Boys
School, Nugegoda and St. Joseph’s College Galle also entered the
quarter-finals to be worked out today at both Modara and Nugegoda.
The finals will be player on Monday.
Janaka overall winner
Overall winner at the 18th Annual Diesel and Motor Engineering
Company’s Golf Tournament was Janaka Thebuwana with 41 points, while
winner of Group `A’ was Chanaka Perera with 36 points, Group `B’ was won
by Gihan Wickremasinghe with 38 points and Group `C’ by Janaka Thebuwana
with 41 points.
The ladies championship was won by Suwaneetha Selvaratnam.
The tournament was sponsored by the RCGC.
Otters cager champs
The closely fought out rousing battle between the Otters and the
Colombo B.C. proved to be a worthy final in the Otters Diamond Jubilee
President’s Cup Basketball championship - where in the end Otters
triumphed in the presence of a large gathering on Friday evening, at the
Otter’s Basketball Court. RD
