The historical records of the Holy Cross College, Kalutara show that
in an era as far back as the latter half of the 19th century, a Burgher
national named Brohier had taken the initiative to start a private
school.
The private school was functioning in a rented house in close
proximity to the Holy Cross Church.
Since then a number of educational luminaries took up the reins of
the college and continued its forward march with firm determination and
selfless dedication overcoming numerous abstracts on its way.
In 1890, the Parish of Kalamulla, Kalutara, Rev. Father Wilkinson
became the fist rector who was instrumental in naming the institution as
Holy Cross English school, later registered as a grant in aid school by
Rev. Fr. Leo Fernando who succeeded Rev. Fr. Wilkinson who was the
founder Principal of Holy Cross College.
Rev. Fr. M. Herel hailed from Nancy, France became the Rector of the
Holy Cross College for a period of 7 years since 1905 and was succeeded
by Rev. Fr Robert Fernando who was responsible for introducing numerous
innovative features to the Holy Cross College.
